INDIVIDUAL THERAPY-A COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL APPROACH
Psychotherapy, these days, is most likely to be built around Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is a scientifically based technique that research has shown to help with a wide range of medical problems including: chronic pain, anxiety, persistent worrying, phobias and panic attacks, depression, obsessions, relationship difficulties. CBT patients are often surprised at how quickly they get results. Many complete their treatment in 3 to 6 months.
Most people coming for therapy need to change something in their lives—whether it’s the way they feel, the way they act, the way other people treat them. CBT focuses on finding out just what needs to be changed and what doesn’t—and then works to make those targeted changes.
The Psychologist takes an active role in helping you define your problem areas. At the first session we begin to develop an understanding of your most pressing problems and you will leave the session having learned at least one specific technique to speed your progress.
CBT tools draw from a wide variety of relaxation techniques, mindfulness meditation, thought stopping protocols, narrative repair, and methods for eliminating cognitive distortions. More traditional counseling approaches may be added to the mix when they are needed.
In follow-up meetings we will review your progress, taking a look at how your new learning has worked out in actual practice. Your problem list will be further clarified and detailed. As you make headway we will choose psychological tools to attack each of the remaining problems. These tools will help you to improve your feelings and moods and give you specific methods for stopping self-defeating thoughts and behaviors.
